Have you been sitting in a baby convertible car seat for a long time? Then your muscles don’t have to work. The result: your metabolic processes are not proceeding as they should. Among other things, your fat breakdown is slowed down, which can lead to health risks. Standing and walking around every half hour is the message. This way your muscles contract, a blessing for your body. Your mental health also benefits from those exercise moments.
Many disorders of young people have a mental cause, says youth doctor Wico Mulder. “From the age of 14 more attention should be paid to the spiritual.”

Wico Mulder is not surprised that one in four children and young people suffer from a chronic disorder, as this week’s research showed. He recently started working at the Dutch Center for Youth Health (NCJ), before that he was a youth doctor in Amsterdam. He sees that young people from the age of 14 mainly suffer from mental problems. It is not for nothing that in the 18 to 25 year olds anxiety and mood disorders are at the top of the list of disorders.
“From 0 to 12 years old, youth healthcare is mainly about the physical part,” says Mulder. “From 14 onwards more attention should be paid to the spiritual.” Mulder specializes in adolescents, the boys and girls who are in secondary and vocational education. “What you see is that among adolescents and adolescents, the diseases are primarily psychosocial. They go for short-term profit instead of long-term happiness and sometimes make wrong choices. That’s why you have to guide them well. That task lies with the parents, but also with schools. They have a duty of care. “
